New Super Mario Bros 2 is the direct sequel to New Super Mario Bros, released in 2006 for Nintendo DS, a 2D platformer that achieved great success on Nintendo DS.
The title sees the famous plumber not only dealing with the usual Bowser, who has once again kidnapped Princess Peach, but also with a mysterious surplus of gold coins in the Mushroom Kingdom. Every level will be literally covered in gold, with coins raining down from pipes, and enemies covered in the precious metal.
The game will have the same gameplay as the previous New Super Mario Bros, again featuring 2D graphics and protagonists Mario and Luigi. In the game, we will see the return of the Super Leaf which, unlike the Super Leaf in Super Mario 3D Land, is much more similar to its Super Mario Bros counterpart, giving Mario raccoon ears and a tail (instead of the full Raccoon Suit from 3D Land) and allowing Mario to fly through the air.
New Super Mario Bros 2 places a lot of importance on collecting coins, with many power-ups designed to increase their number. These include Golden Flowers that turn blocks into coins, rings that temporarily turn enemies into gold, and a block mask that produces coins as Mario runs. Regarding the surrounding gameplay elements, there are new obstacles and enemies to face.
Similar to New Super Mario Bros. Wii, two players can play simultaneously as Mario and Luigi. The game also includes a Coin Rush mode, where players can play through three levels with only one life, trying to collect as many coins as possible. High scores will be shared via StreetPass.
