In 1986, young jujutsu practitioner Ryo Hazuki returns to his father's dojo, Iwao Hazuki, and witnesses his murder at the hands of a Chinese man, Lan Di. Lan Di then steals a mysterious artifact known as the Dragon Mirror, and Ryo vows to avenge his father's death, setting off in pursuit of Lan Di.
In the first game of the series, the story begins with Ryo's journey as he searches for clues about his father's murder, confronting fearsome gangsters.
In the sequel, Shenmue II, Ryo's quest continues as he delves deeper into the criminal underworld to uncover the mysteries of the Dragon Mirror kept by his father.
