Shenmue III is the long-awaited sequel to the Dreamcast classics Shenmue (1999) and Shenmue II (2001). Conceived by award-winning Game Director, Yu Suzuki, Shenmue combines the action-packed gameplay of the classic arcade game Virtua Fighter with RPG mechanics.
Commonly known as one of the most ambitious game projects in history, Shenmue captured the imagination of gamers worldwide with its unique setting, the intimate and cinematic story focusing on the character of Ryo, realistic battles, and fun mini-games. Many of the features introduced in Shenmue are now common in modern games, including open-world and Quick Time Events. Shenmue III was officially announced on stage at Sony's press conference during E3 2015 and simultaneously launched on the Kickstarter crowdfunding platform, breaking two Guinness World Records after raising over $6 million. The game is currently under development at Yu Suzuki's independent company, Ys Net, based in Tokyo, and many original members of the Shenmue team have returned for the third installment.
