In this fourth installment of the popular Mario & Luigi role-playing game series, the story opens with Princess Peach and her staff, plus brothers Mario and Luigi in tow, invited to sightsee on the mysterious Pi'illo Island by its equally mysterious owner, Dr. Snoozemore. But after an initially hospitable welcome on the island, albeit with Dr. Snoozemore noticeably absent, things take a turn for the worse when Princess Peach is kidnapped and dragged into a dream world by a new enemy to the series, the bat-king ghost Antasma.

To pursue this new enemy and rescue Princess Peach, Mario must enter this Dream World through the dreams of the sleeping Luigi, whose brain is revealed to be in tune with the population of Pi'illo Island, the Pi'illo Folk. Alternating between Luigi’s Dream World and the real world, Mario and Luigi must solve puzzles, battle enemies, and even interact with the creations of Luigi’s imagination to succeed!

The relationship between the real world and the Dream World plays a pivotal role within the game. While roaming the real-world Pi'illo Island environment, Mario and Luigi must likewise team up to use Bros. Moves, while in the Dream World, it is the power of Dreamy Luigi that is central to supporting Mario. For example, Luiginary Works are magical ways in which the player can interact with the Dream World environment via Luigi’s sleeping form. Whether it is by tugging at Luigi’s moustache or scratching his nose on the console’s bottom screen, this interaction causes a reaction in the Dream World, influencing the environment for Mario’s benefit.

In Dream World battle sequences, the power of Dreamy Luigi again comes to the fore as a horde of Luigis powers up Mario to create formidable Luiginary Attacks, moves that differ greatly from the Bros. Attacks in the real world and which make use of the Nintendo 3DS or Nintendo 3DS XL consoles’ capabilities in original ways. For example, one Luiginary Attack comprises Mario riding a ball of Luigis, with the player using the console’s motion controls to navigate the ball’s path to flatten enemies in front of it. Whether attacking, counter-attacking or dodging in battle, the console’s 3D capabilities are also key for players to judge perfectly timed actions.

When a battle is won, the leveling-up mechanic in the game follows a classic RPG formula, with experience points gained, improving common attributes like health points and power. There are also classic franchise attributes such as Bro points, needed to perform special attacks, and STACHE, which affects the chance of Mario or Luigi landing a critical hit in battle, remaining in this latest installment in the Mario & Luigi series. Following previous games in the series there is also a badge reward system, whereby both brothers can find or buy badges in-game which can be combined to earn useful rewards for the brothers after certain actions – such as performing “excellent” attacks – have been made in battle.
