Roguelike, Rogue-lite, Roguelike-like, Rogueschmike! No matter what you call them, the world could always use another one! As such, we would like to present for your consideration, the illegitimate child of the roguelike and metroidvania, the RogueVANIA. Anyway, enough with the sales pitch, let's take a closer look.

With metroidVania, we are really talking about a fixed, hand-designed and interconnected world. The game takes place on an immense island that never changes. All biomes, bosses and paths between them are present from the beginning. Getting to them is another story...

However, in Dead Cells, death replaces the traditional backtracking mechanics of a metroidvania. At first, seemingly unreachable areas will be scattered along your path, but the answers to these puzzles will appear as you explore the island. Be it a key, a new acrobatic ability, or a forgotten spell. Once discovered, this knowledge will stay with you, allowing you to unlock new paths to your goal. Sick of the stinking sewers? Climb over the ramparts and take a breath of fresh air! It's your skill, your playstyle, and, of course, the loot you'll find that will determine your path.

Furthermore, as the term "RogueVania" might (not so) subtly imply, we have also been strongly influenced by the recent wave of roguelites. When there are no checkpoints to save you from your failures, adrenaline kicks in. And when you lose, you lose big, so you have to make it out alive. Instead of relying on the classic formula of memorizing level design and enemy placement, procedural generation allows us to reward your instincts, your reflexes, and your ability to adapt to evolving situations.

That said, we are aware that the words "procedural generation" evoke images of shoddy levels and uninteresting gameplay in the minds of many players. So we opted for a hybrid solution, where each run is a mashup of carefully designed level "blocks." The idea is to give you the feeling of a meticulously handcrafted world, while ensuring a new experience every time.

Don't expect it to be a walk in the park though. Pattern-based monsters and challenging boss fights will teach you to pick your battles and build your strength. Each weapon has its own unique feel and rolling and dodging will become second nature as you learn to deal with monster mobs that will overwhelm the unprepared. We're looking for that "tough, but fair" feeling.
