amiibo figures represent a completely new and innovative way to interact with your favorite Nintendo characters and games.
These figures have a special chip embedded that uses NFC communication technology.
By touching the NFC sensor on the Wii U GamePad, New Nintendo 3DS and New Nintendo 3DS XL, or the NFC reader/writer accessory* (in the case of other Nintendo 3DS family consoles) with a figure while playing certain titles, data on the chip will be automatically transferred to the game, allowing the character to appear on screen, for example. During games, in certain titles, the data of your figure will also be updated, so by continuing to play, you can make your amiibo truly unique!

Using amiibo is simple. The Wii U console's GamePad already has a built-in NFC sensor that allows you to use amiibo figures. New Nintendo 3DS and New Nintendo 3DS XL also have a built-in NFC sensor, so no accessory needs to be purchased to use amiibo with these two consoles.
For Nintendo 3DS, a dedicated accessory called an NFC reader/writer is available that can "read" the figures.
That said, to use an amiibo in a compatible game, you simply need to place the figure on the NFC sensor.
