Even with state-of-the-art scanners, matting spray needs to be applied in several application cases:
a) Transparent parts
Since we are dealing with optical technologies, light must be reflected from the surface into the scanner's sensor. In the case of a transparent surface, however, light will pass through the surface instead of being reflected by it. As a result, the scanner is unable to capture the surface structure.
b) Reflective parts
In the case of reflective parts, such as a mirror, light beams will be reflected focally instead of diffusely. This means that the chance of a beam hitting the scanner's reflector is significantly reduced, and the scanner will only capture a fraction of the reflected light beams.
c) Deep cavities
When the object to be scanned has deep cavities, the scanner receives reflections from the cavity walls at the bottom. This causes disturbances in the light pattern that manifest in the scan as "artifacts" or incorrect data.
d) High quality and precision
When quality and accuracy are important, you may apply the spray to remove as much as possible color differences, reflection differences, texture, etc.
The use of the spray creates a white, matte coating that reduces reflections and other inhomogeneities and thus provides a perfect scanning condition.

In general, matting sprays used in 3D metrology for anti-glare coating can be classified into the following two product groups:
Permanent sprays
- the surface remains white after scanning
- cleaning required or disposal of the scanned object
Evanescent sprays
- the coating evaporates automatically
- no cleaning required after scanning
- no contamination from pigments in laboratories, sensors, environments, scanners, and users
AESUB white - strengths
AESUB white is a permanent scanning spray, developed by scanning experts.
It is the result of further development of permanent scanning sprays.
The spray applies an opaque and homogeneous layer to the object's surface. It has been developed for optimal contrast values in optical scanning applications. AESUB white contains pigments, propellant, and solvent and has been optimized in terms of material compatibility. AESUB white sets new standards by optimizing surface homogeneity and reducing layer thickness.
Unlike traditional sprays, AESUB white is free of titanium dioxide, which is associated with carcinogenic inhalation incidents by the European Chemicals Agency.
