In 1349, the plague scourges the kingdom of France, and Amicia and her younger brother are pursued by the Inquisition.

Around them, villages devastated by the disease offer little refuge, were it not for other children their age, young orphans who offer them help and support to escape supernatural hordes of rats using light and fire.

The bond between the two siblings is the only thing that truly matters and is the driving force of the entire plot, allowing them to face the darkest days of the Middle Ages and the desperate struggle for survival that awaits them.

However, not everything is against them; shadows offer shelter from the eyes of the Inquisition, and rats are just as dangerous to their enemies. Thanks to their young age, Amicia and Hugo can devise diabolical plans to get rid of their enemies and turn them against each other.
